  Basketball Pre-Game Officials Conference Board

Basketball

  1. Pre Game Duties : referee/umpire/Table/Game Management
    On Floor at 15:00 minute mark, Captains and Coaches at 13:00
     
  2. New Rules / Points of Emphasis
     
  3. Possession Arrow / 3 Point Play (When to Shadow each other)
     
  4. Floor Coverage - Who's watching what?
         ? Off Ball Coverage     ? Eye Contact     ?Airborne Shooter
     
  5. Switches - (No switches after time outs)
     
  6. Out of Bounds Coverage and In Bound plays
     
  7. Over and Back - "The 3 Points" / Counts - 10, 5, and 3 second
     
  8. Adjust and help when Full Court pressure occurs
     
  9. Foul call technique / Free throw administration/ Free throw coverage areas
     
  10. Substitutions - Players into game / Player out of game (fouling out)
     
  11. Time outs / Expiration of Time / Special Situations
     
  12. Double Whistles / Double Fouls and False Double Fouls
     
  13. Fouls / Coaching Boxes / Bench Decorum
     
  14. Review Personnel of Teams / Styles of Play
     
  15. Last second procedure
     
  16. Review overtime Procedure
     
  17. End of game / leaving floor / half-time and post game conference
     
  18. Call the obvious fouls and violations
     
  19. Basket Interference and Goal Tending
     
  20. Use advantage / disadvantage principal with contact (especially screening)
         ? Block / Charge - be in position, see it, call it, sell it
     
  21. Referee the defense when the ball is in your primary area
     
  22. Atypical Situations; Fight, intentional fouls, flagrant fouls , double technical

Major Points

  • Establish a Tempo - let the game come to you
  • Communicate with your partner / never show him or her up
  • The Fans are their to watch the players...... not you
  • Trust your partners to call there primary area / make sure you call yours too!
  • Never call something you cannot administer
  • What are the five correctable errors?
  • Limit talking to the players and coaches - It will come back to haunt you
  • Look sharp, be confident, be professional and hustle all the time
