The following are TEN
STEPS to officiating EXCELLENCE!!
1. PHYSICAL CONDITIONING--The athletic look with a
strong cardio-vascular base.
2. MENTAL APPROACH--understand the ROLE of the
official and prepare yourself mentally for each assignment.
3. PSYCHOLOGICAL APPROACH--self-image and
relationships within the game. Affirmation, visualization, self-fulfilling
prophesy, fear of failure, etc.
4. INNER DESIRE TO GROW--a drive to improve...no
matter how much you have or have not accomplished.
5. HONESTY--looking at yourself with objectivity
being able to identify strengths and weaknesses...making an
accurate self-evaluation.
6. BE A GREAT PARTNER--take pride in each game and
assist others who may not be as talented as you. Avoid self-promotion at
your partner's expense.
7. PROFESSIONAL APPROACH--each game deserves your
maximum effort, your seriousness of purpose no matter what level of game
or the score or setting.
8. BE A COMPETITOR--BUT compete against yourself.
Beat the game tape.
9. RULES KNOWLEDGE--very very important BUT the
spirit of the rules should also be considered.
10. INTEGRITY--- INTEGRITY---INTEGRITY !!
OFFICIATING BASICS
REFEREE THE DEFENSE: This is a must for all one on
one situations. Our "self-talk" must remind us constantly.
CALL THE OBVIOUS: Most plays will call themselves
with good concentration. React to an action. Be ready!!
STAY WITH PRIMARY COVERAGE: If each official does a
solid job with their primary coverage, there will be no secondary area
calls.
BE A GREAT PARTNER: If each official brings out the
best in their partner the result should be a well officiated game. That
what Magic Johnson and Larry Bird did as players for their teammates.
CONCENTRATION
1. Distractions, Diversions and Psychological frame of
mind.
2. Game day preparation
3. Pre-game preparation
4. Attitudes-Attitudes-Attitudes-How do I relate to this
game?
5. Know my role-How my concentration level can change
during the game
6. Self-image-Does it effect my productivity???
7. Competition and the competitor-Do I compete?
8. Psychological tool for increased efficiency
9. Improve your presentation and upgrade the perception
10. Tunnel vision--Call the play or no call the play.
Regardless of consequences---INTEGRITY!!
